Khadija Mohamed holds her son Mohamed Abdi, 8 months, as he is prepared to receive an IV needle in order to recieve fluids to combat severe malnutrition. The pastoralist family had migrated from the Gaashaamo region of Ethiopia due drought conditions. 363,000 Somali children under age 5 who are acutely malnourished, including 71,000 who are severely malnourished and face a high risk of disease and death.

Hussein Dirie, 70, stands behind one of his dead camels outside the village Xidh Xidh. He has lost 280 goats and 2 camels due to the drought. Mr. Dirie is one of the few families in the area that hasn't left the region as his remaining animals are too weak to move.
